The Festival for German Unity Day 2024:
A joyous celebration that protects the environment
We aim to make the Festival for German Unity Day as climate friendly as possible and have developed a range of sustainability criteria that are mandatory for all those involved in organising the festival: the event organisers, service providers, exhibitors, caterers and anyone else behind the scenes.
As a visitor, you can help to make the festival more eco-friendly, for example by sorting any waste you dispose of on the festival grounds.
A major topic: avoiding waste
- All catering stands and food service providers at the Festival of Unity 2024 in Schwerin are required to use reusable serviceware and employ a deposit scheme. Disposable serviceware and materials are not permitted.
- Exhibitors are requested to refrain from using giveaways and promotional gifts and to hand out information material such as flyers and catalogues in moderation.
- At the Festival of Unity, in the public areas and the logistics stations (e.g. for exhibitors) waste can be separated to allow it to be sorted and disposed of or recycled in order to save resources (paper, glass, organic and residual waste).
An event that saves resources
- The entire event site with all stages and activity areas is powered by green electricity generated in the region. Energy-efficient equipment is prioritised for the stage and event equipment.
- All new decoration materials for the stands and activity areas must be produced with carbon offsetting and be reusable.
- All banners and signs on the festival site and for signposting and information must be produced with carbon offsetting and certified accordingly.
Transport and mobility
- The event site is easy to reach on public transport. Transport hubs such as the main railway station, Marienplatz and Platz der Jugend are located in the immediate vicinity of the festival site.
- To reduce the volume of traffic and minimise the burden on the environment, all those involved in the Festival of Unity are encouraged to use trains, regional buses and public transport. Additional trains will be running on the Berlin-Schwerin and Hamburg-Schwerin lines in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn and ODEG.
- The local public transport operator in Schwerin (NVS) is increasing service frequency for buses and trams. The trams will have more carriages and space for passengers.
- Visitors from Schwerin and the surrounding area are encouraged to come to the Festival of Unity by bike and use the free, guarded bike stations. These are located on the north bank of the Pfaffenteich, at the Stadthafen car park and at Bertha-Klingberg-Platz.
Light installation at the Pfaffenteich – bringing alternative energies to life
One of the highlights of the Festival of Unity is the light installation at Pfaffenteich, which will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells. This innovative installation, which is being facilitated by Stadtwerke Schwerin and GP JOULE, picks up on the theme of alternative energies and makes the topic visible and graspable for all visitors. It shows how hydrogen fuel cells can be used as a sustainable energy source and is an example of the future of energy generation.
Offsetting
Despite all efforts, there is unfortunately no way of implementing major events so that they are completely carbon neutral. The organisers of the Festival of Unity are aware of this and are planning offsetting measures in the form of a donation to support a certified climate-friendly project.
