A tradition of innovation – “Moin” from Bremen

In Germany, the federal state of Bremen occupies a singular position, being the only state that consists of two cities: Germany’ smallest federal state is comprised of Bremen and Bremerhaven, two cities that are 60 kilometres apart. The state currently has 676,463 inhabitants. The two exclaves are united by their commitment to tradition and modernism across a wide range of institutions, products and services. As a Hanseatic trading centre, Bremen is home to many big names from the food and spirits sectors. Logistics is a major industry in both cities. The state plays a leading role in research and innovation, including aerospace, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and lightweight construction, hydrogen and marine research. The close proximity of industry and science acts as real innovation driver. But it’s not all work and innovation here: the state offers a great choice of leisure activities, an enviably diverse cultural scene that includes open-air classical music and free outdoor concerts, great museums and science centres. In Bremen and Bremerhaven, both the water and the countryside are never far away. As the story has it, the famous Town Musicians set off because they knew they would be welcomed in Bremen. Bremen’s town hall is the seat of the state government. Visit the 600-year-old town hall on Bremen’s market square, which, together with the Roland statue, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Beck's

Around 3,000 bottles of Beck’s are drunk worldwide every minute. This means that the Bremen company produces the most widely consumed German beer in the world.

Weser Stadium

The very first goal in the Bundesliga was scored in the Weser Stadium in 1963. It is also the only stadium that has a pier so that fans can travel there by boat.

The state of Bremen will be opening the Ländermeile on Berta-Klingberg-Platz and invites you to enjoy a refreshing Beck’s beer or a fine wine from the Ratskeller. As you sip your drink, you can find out more about the wealth of tourist attractions in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Marvel at the innovative spirit of the state – the centre of the aerospace industry, and take a seat in the latest electric car built by Mercedes-Benz. These are only two examples that breathe life into the state’s motto “Innovative by Tradition”. In Bremen and Bremerhaven, tradition and the future are aligned in a variety of ways. Two different performances of the fairy tale of the Bremen Town Musicians reveal how multi-facetted and multi-coloured life is in the two-city state. Music will form the heart of the evening programme, with the Rockmusikanten inviting audiences to rock out.

TWO CITIES. ONE STATE.

The official name of the state is the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, and it is comprised of the cities Bremen and Bremerhaven, which are 60 kilometres apart. The harbour in Bremerhaven belongs to the city of Bremen. The president of the senate of the city of Bremen is also the mayor of the city of Bremen; Bremerhaven has its own mayor.

TELEVISION HISTORY IN BREMEN

On 10 June 1950, the ‘Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten’, ARD or Das Erste for short, was founded in Bremen. Radio Bremen launched Germany’s very first talk show, called 3nach9, in 1974. The programme is still broadcast once a month on Friday evenings. Many well-known television stars, including Hape Kerkeling, Maren Kroymann, Jan Böhmermann, Vicco von Bülow (known as Loriot), Katja Riemann, Arnd Zeigler and Sven Regner, started their careers in Bremen.

BREMEN’S FIFTH AND SIXTH SEASON

Not content to be pinned down to a mere four seasons, Bremen has added two more. In October, “Ischa Freimaak” is the motto for 17 days, when the people of Buten and Binnen (outside and inside) Bremen celebrate the Bremen Freimarkt, one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany. It takes place on a square next to Bremen’s main railway station and is packed with rides and merry-go-rounds, grand prizes and countless tempting snacks and sweets. At the beginning of January, sports and fun, music and enjoyment are combined at the famous Sixdays, a sporting event known as the “sixth season” which has been captivating visitors for over 50 years.

Elvis in Bremerhaven

The King of Rock’n’Roll landed in Bremerhaven in 1958 when he was stationed in Germany for his military service. Tens of thousands of spectators gathered at Columbuskaje to greet Elvis Presley. Now, a memorial stone marks the sport where the music legend took his first step onto German soil.

THE FISH FINGER CAPITAL

Many tasty fish variants come from Bremerhaven. In the seaside city at the mouth of the Weser, 2.7 billion fish fingers are produced every year. The popular frozen product is shipped from Bremerhaven all over the world. Laid lengthwise, the amount produced annually is enough to go five times around the earth.
