Rhineland Palatinate is a relatively young state on historic ground. Located at the heart of Europe, it combines tradition and modernity, handicrafts and tomorrow’s technology, beautiful countryside and cultural wealth with economic success.
Since the Romans arrived here, over 2,000 years of eventful history have left their mark. On the 18th of May 1947, regions that were formerly Prussian, Hessian and Bavarian were joined to create a new state: Rhineland Palatinate.
History was written here: “Black, Red, and Gold”, the colours of the Hambach Festival – the very first democratic protest march on German soil – remain our national colours today. History was also printed in the state: this is where Johannes Gutenberg invented the letterpress.
Today, the state continues to shape this century of change, and is committed to driving forward the social and ecological transformation of business and society, including the expansion of renewable energy.

Hambach Castle
Hambach Castle is a living centre of German and European democratic history. The castle has been considered the cradle of German democracy since the Hambach Festival on 27 May 1832.
The Moselle Loop near Bremm
The steep slopes of the Calmont and the Stuben monastery ruins create a stunning natural setting. The Bremmer Calmont is the steepest vineyard in Europe.
The German Corner in Koblenz
The Rhine and the Moselle flow together at the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz. The Kaiser Wilhelm monument, which attracts more than 2 million visitors a year, stands tall on the promontory.
Eltz Castle
The medieval Eltz Castle survived all wars unscathed and is considered the most beautiful castle in Europe thanks to its architecture and unique location. It is one of Germany’s biggest Instagram stars.
The Porta Nigra in Trier
Built by the Romans in 170 CE, the Porta Nigra (the “Black Gate”) is the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps and is Trier’s landmark.
