Culture, art, information:

Events at other venues and locations

In addition to the official programme at the Festival of Unity, other venues, places, organisations and institutions will be organising inspiring events to mark German Unity Day.

Highlights

  • The State Chancellery opens its doors on 4 October from 10 am to 5 pm and will be offering guided tours of the building. Registrations for the guided tours were possible until 20 September at www.regierung-mv.de/Besuch. Anyone interested can also find out about the work of the state government in the information area outside the State Chancellery on 4 October.
  • At the NDR Entertainment Area at the Marstall, NDR will be presenting entertainment and exciting hands-on activities for guests of all ages: photography with green screen technology, a look around an outside broadcast van, and a Sesame Street stand with crafts and activities. Ernie and Bert will be here every day, and will be joined by Kikaninchen and Bernd the Bread on 3 and 4 October. NDR 1 Radio MV presenter Nils Söhrens will be guiding you through the fun MV game.
  • There are three exhibitions at the E-Werk: the Kunstverein für Mecklenburg und Vorpommern in Schwerin with the ‘Potemkin Art Academy Schwerin’ by Ton Matton; the Kunsthalle Rostock with ‘Wandel der Notwendigkeit’ by Kestutis Svirnelis and an exhibition by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs MV on the Baltic Sea Strategy.
  • From 30 September 2024, the Ministry of the Interior, Building and Digitalisation at the Arsenal am Pfaffenteich will be presenting the remarkable new touring exhibition Alles Wissen Wollen. Die Stasi und ihre Dokumente. In the on-site and online display, 21 objects from the archive show the sinister work of the GDR secret police.
  • The Parlament der Dinge will be sitting in session at the M*Halle. This project to encourage teenagers and young adults to participate in democracy will be inviting audiences to vote on complex issues in six sessions. There will also be the premiere of the play Nullerjahre by Hendrik Bolz and director Nina Gühlstorff in cooperation with the Rostock University of Music and Theatre. Forty-two posters designed by artists which campion more democracy, tolerance and openness will be on display in the #protestyfield exhibition in the M*Halle.
  • On the Schliemannterrasse, the Wahrnehmungswerkstatt (perception workshop) by sculptor and architect Rainer Düvell invites visitors to an experimental exploration of an installation on reunification.
  • On Lake Schwerin, the motto of the citizens’ festival “Setting Sail Together” is being taken literally: from 2 to 4 October, the State Cup competition for inclusive sailing will be held here, featuring teams of two from each federal state competing against each other. What makes the competition special is that each team consists of one person with and one person without a disability. The patron is Minister President Manuela Schwesig. The Heinz Kettler Deutschland Cup will also take place from 4 to 6 October.
  • Along the southern shores of Pfaffenteich, the event’s sponsorship partner AIDA Cruises will be showcasing its cruises in the AIDA Holiday World – with smooth sounds from AIDAradio and the AIDA on-board DJ, a coffee bike, deckchairs under palm trees, an attractive competition and the AIDAcosma show cabin. The highlight on Friday evening is an exclusive after-show party with VIZE.
  • The ZDF-Fernsehgarten on Tour will also be visiting Schwerin on 4 and 6 October (tickets are sold out).
  • At the City Library Schwerin, author and former State Secretary Dr Zsuzsa Breier will be reading from her book “1989 – Das Jahr beginnt” on 2 October. In it, she tells of the struggle for freedom at the turn of 1989 in Hungary and the two German states, but from an unusual perspective. Zsuzsa Breier takes the audience back in time through changing events and perspectives, skilfully weaving the archive material into a new history of a period of upheaval.
The reading is organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.
  • At the Filmpalast Capitol, on 3 October, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom presents the exclusive documentary DIE UNBEUGSAMEN 2 – GUTEN MORGEN, IHR SCHÖNEN! With the sequel to his successful film DIE UNBEUGSAMEN, director Torsten Körner paints a vivid group portrait of East German women from the most diverse areas of society in the GDR, and offers a captivating stage for their life achievements and their fight for equal opportunities. The film screening will be followed by a discussion with the director and GDR civil rights activist Ulrike Poppe.
  • Pausing to take stock of the situation – that is the score, in German: Spielstand. Is there also a score between East and West Germany? The Dezernat5 producers’ gallery at Franz-Mehring-Straße 11 wants to clarify this artistically on the occasion of German Unity Day. SPIEL:STAND shows current works in the fields of object, video and installation by Tino Bittner, Udo Dettmann and Thomas Sander – three artists who would not have found each other without reunification. Until 16 November.
